Nobody was left, and this bombed out hell hole was still and silent. Nothing moved, nothing stirred in the skeletal remains of the seven story apartment block, nor the decimated hulks of the smaller buildings about the base of the tower.
The apartment block building was one of the few buildings that still stood tall. Girders protruded from great holes in the side of the building and on the roof, like skeletal fingers clawing madly at the sky. The building still had a staircase, and heavy footprints had disturbed the dust that had lain untouched by human feet for years. These footprints were fresh and clearly the imprint of a large boot, but there was something unusual about them, something very unusual indeed. The trail ended half way up the stairs, as if the one responsible had simply disappeared into the air.
In actual fact, Major James Stone crouched low at the edge of the roof. The battle suits adaptive camouflage and heat signature masking making him invisible, undetectable, safe. As he gazed out over the orange tinted city through his visor, Stone sighed to himself.
The intercom crackled with unrestrained static - the sound of nothing, of emptiness. There was no one left it seemed, and that made Stone the last man alive. It was up to him to complete the mission or return to HQ, anything else was unacceptable. First though, he'd have to find an alternative power source for the FD battle suit and the Hadron rifle, and in city 17 this would be no easy task. Stone had read the city's Situation Report, and the outlook was grim. Human survivors were scarce here, and technology was even rarer. Still, it was worth a try.
The radio ticked over as it began to search for active frequencies within this area of the city, scanning the airwaves for any kind of response. Nothing. Still, this area of the city was littered with decaying corpses and the long dead remains of man, demon and angel alike. Clearly this area had seen intense fighting, and would be no place for humans inhabit. No, if there were survivors, they would be elsewhere.
Suddenly his visor’s HUD was lit up by a proximity alert. The suit's tracking system flared into life, and Stone watched as a single target moved into the building and began to ascend the battered staircase. Stone quickly brought up the electromagnetic sensors, and his visor took on a dark blue tint. Only the metal struts of the building were visible, as were the nuts and bolts that somehow held together this ancient and ruined structure. Then he saw it. These supernatural creatures always gave off electromagnetic energy that was well above the visible end of the spectrum. It made them easy to find, and easier to kill.
This one was apparently a hunter class - H5N1. This was the creature that had been tracking him for the past hour? Its hulking black form was distinctly outlined against the blue tinted background. The creature was a brainless killing machine, much like a demonic dog, and was one of Stone’s least favourite demons. Not that Stone had a favourite demon. He had no respect for these things, they were incapable of coherent thought, and he just hated them, as he hated all denizens of hell, but perhaps more than he hated the others - if that was possible.
Stone switched the vis-system back to visible light, keeping the electromagnetic window in the upper right area of his HUD. With quick, well drilled reactions Stone lifted his pulse rifle to his shoulder and took careful aim at the top of the staircase. The weapon hummed as it lit up, coming to life to bring death to those foolish enough to underestimate mankind. Although the suits batteries were steadily getting lower, Stone was not yet in the red and could afford this scale of power usage, especially if it meant staying alive. The H5N1 was a hell of a beast, literally. Stone would not hesitate, would not ask any questions, but would simply dispatch the thing, as he had done so many times before. It was, after all, his job.
Suddenly the target moved, heading for Stone's position. The tracking system flashed warnings as it approached.

The creature literally erupted onto the roof. It's evil red eyes glowing in the half light of the approaching day. Its jaw hung slack, exposing row upon row of fearsome fangs and thick saliva rolled down its chin. A look of puzzlement crossed it's features briefly as it looked about the seemingly empty rooftop, before Stone pulled the trigger.
The beasts head erupted in a cloud of grey dust, leaving a gaping hole between its shoulders. Black blood ran freely from the wound, falling to the floor with a disgusting splat as the creature's body slumped and fell forward, crashing to the ground to land in a gathering pool of its own lifeblood.
The pulse rifle was satisfyingly silent as always. In the science fiction movies of his time pulse rifles were noisy, annoying weapons that attracted too much attention. In reality, they were silent, gave of no light, had no smell, no muzzle flash - only the electromagnetic pulse that had spelled doom for so many dark creatures. They were perfect instruments of death.
"Score one for humanity, mutt" Stone muttered into his helmet. There was no one to hear him, but that didn't matter. Stone had to get away from here, now. The tracking system had already picked up another target approaching, but it was too far away to check exactly what it was. There were few options, but Stone could not move just yet. He had to be sure the creature was truly dead. The H5N1 rarely replicated or stood back up again, in fact it had never been known to before. Still, you could never be sure these days. Stone and his team had found that out the hard way below the streets of City 17.
He had to get out of this place. He had a job to do.

Ariel watched from afar,her sword glinted ever so slightly.The latin words,visable from thier own fiery glow:Dum spiramus, tuebimur.While we breathe,we shall defend she thought aautomatically.Is that what the man was doing defending poeple?No he wasn't or was he?The world had become far more confusing since she was alive.Her wavy hair blew wildly in the a invisable wind.Her blood red wings seemed to wrap around.Her head was thingyed and her sea green eyes seemed keenly intelligent.She moved forward but not to the man,his own personality intruged her though.
